Benefits Of Minimally Invasive Dentistry

Preserve more of the tooth

Overall, minimally invasive dentistry helps preserve more of your child’s natural tooth than other methods of treatment. It’s always better to preserve more of their natural tissue, and this reduces the need for drilling, too.

Reduce or eliminate discomfort

Drilling is often not even necessary for minimally invasive dental treatments. And that means numbing needles may not even be needed. This makes procedures a lot easier for little ones who may be scared of drills and needles.

Simpler overall treatment

Simpler is always better. Our Fairfield team can treat your child more quickly and get them back to their routine faster with simple treatments like silver diamine fluoride. This is also great if you and your child have busy schedules.

Save Money

In general, minimally invasive dentistry is cheaper than other treatments. This family of treatment techniques requires less time, resources, and tools. That adds up to a better bargain for your family.

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) uses a special liquid consisting of water, ammonia, fluoride, and silver. This is painted directly onto a cavity. Once it contacts the cavity, this mixture seals the damaged enamel and hardens. This creates a strong barrier that stops further decay.

This is a great alternative to a traditional filling for baby teeth at our Fairfield dental practice. SDF will stain the tooth, so it’s not recommended for adult teeth. But for baby teeth, SDF can prevent further decay and keep the tooth healthy until it’s replaced by an adult tooth.

SMART Fillings

SMART fillings are a good alternative to traditional “drill and fill” dental fillings at your pediatric dentist in Fairfield, CT. In this process, Dr. Michelle will apply a special type of SDF to your child’s tooth. This halts the decay in their tooth. Then, Dr. Michelle will apply a special type of glass ionomer cement (GIC) filling. This filling matches the color of your child’s natural tooth, providing a seamless restoration. SMART fillings are great for restoring teeth that may be too decayed to be treated with SDF alone.

What Are Hall Crowns?

The Hall crown technique uses a pre-fitted stainless steel crown to cover up and restore decayed teeth. In this process, Dr. Michelle will apply glass ionomer cement (GIC) directly to your child’s tooth. Then, she will place a pre-fitted stainless steel filling onto the tooth.

Unlike the traditional crown placement technique, this means that your child can get a crown with no drilling of their natural enamel. Hall crowns from our Fairfield dental office are a great choice for larger cavities that may not be treatable with SDF or SMART fillings.

How Long Do Minimally Invasive Treatments Typically Last?

This depends on the treatment. SDF must be reapplied every 2-12 months until your child’s baby tooth falls out and is replaced by an adult tooth. SMART fillings and Hall crowns, on the other hand, are very long lasting. They will last until your child’s baby tooth is replaced by an adult tooth.
